Here's my first attempt at designing an app icon using GIMP. It slightly follows the Material design Google Plus app icon where a rounded corner square sits slightly on a shadowed background with a embossed logo that casts a shadow on the lower right. I then needed a symbol to indicate that this is some kind of app store. Hence, the cart.
